Carl Maria von Weber's romantic masterpiece Der Freischütz, based on a libretto by Johann Friedrich Kind, is considered the first German national opera. This recording presents Weber's ingenious work in a production by the "grande dame of director's theater," Ruth Berghaus (1927-1996), who staged this Freischütz for the Zurich Opera House in 1993. A revival in 1999 provided an opportunity to document her work in exemplary fashion. Almost all of Ruth Berghaus' opera productions have been described as "highly controversial," and Freischütz is no exception.
