The Symphonies Nos. 61, 66 and 69 recorded here by Giovanni Antonini and the Basel Chamber Orchestra were composed in 1776. For Haydn, they formed a cheerful and upbeat conclusion, so to speak, before a period began in which he devoted himself intensively to writing and conducting operas, which were the prince's new hobbyhorse. The so-called Children's Symphony, which was long attributed to Haydn until it turned out that it was more likely composed by a Benedictine monk, rounds off the program in a similarly light and cheerful atmosphere.
