The theme of "Sleeping Beauty" was rarely set to music in France before the 1890s, when Silver began to work on it. Only an opera by Carafa and a ballet by Hérold, both composed in the 1820s, had prompted the Paris Opera to take an interest in Perrault's fairy tale. In contrast, it sparked a much livelier revival of interest in Silver's time: Within a few years, a mélodie by Debussy, a symphonic poem by Alfred Bruneau, a romance by Edmond Missa and an opéra-bouffe by Charles Lecocq appeared under this title. Silver's "Féerie" had long been at the top of the list of curiosities that the Palazzetto Bru Zane had selected for exploration. An excerpt was sung by Jodie Devos in a recital dedicated to fairytale music and recorded by Alpha Classics in 2016. All that remained was to take the plunge and revive the entire work. Our collaboration with the Hungarian National Choir and Orchestra - whose first fruits were David's "Herculanum", Massenet's "Werther" and Lalo's "Le Roi d'Ys" - proved to be the ideal setting for this project.
