In this adaptation of Abbé Prévost's novel, Kenneth MacMillan shows himself at his best. His keen insight into human psychology and masterful choreography are fully expressed in the passionate duets of the central couple, which are passionate and haunting in their desire. The heroine's struggle to escape poverty makes Manon one of the most dramatic and harrowing ballets, underscored by Nicholas Georgiadis' atmospheric set design, which reflects the juxtaposition of Manon's impoverished background and the opulent world in which she aspires to live.
