How does a talented boy become a master? How does an entire epoch change from a classical ideal to a romantic vision? Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's two violin concertos provide a vivid answer to this question. Between the thirteen-year-old child prodigy of 1822 and the mature master of 1844, not only the development of an extraordinary composer unfolds, but also the entire range of Mendelssohn's aesthetic: a love of form with a simultaneous willingness to innovate, a combination of technical perfection with emotional immediacy, a balance between tradition and progress.
