This CD is, moreover, the first to present a performance on gut strings and, in addition, contains two quartets of which this is the first recording. Filled with enthusiasm for this intelligent, complex, highly varied music… The rediscovery of this important composer of chamber music of the first half of the 19th century is of a major interest. No fewer than 36 quartets, 34 quintets, 10 trios and a number of works for winds or keyboards make him one of the most prolific French composers of the period working in the genre. A comparison of the historical and musical contexts sheds light on the strange fate of this composer of whom it might be said he had the bad luck to be born in the wrong place at the wrong time. In a market saturated with "light" instrumental music, Onslow’s quartets were made known and circulated more or less privately. When he died in 1853, the Auvergne composer was the last French representative of the classical string quartet and quintet tradition.
