Dmitri Tcherniakov is regarded as a "rebel and cosmopolitan" among contemporary opera directors (according to Deutschlandfunk Kultur). Whether in Milan, New York or Berlin: his productions are much discussed, much noticed, often enough a thorn in the conservatives' dusty understanding of opera. The staging of the "Ring des Nibelungen" at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in autumn 2022, with Christian Thielemann conducting the Staatskapelle Berlin, was a worldwide triumph, not least because of the top-class cast.
