The French pianist Maxime Zecchini deserves the gold medal for the most comprehensive edition with recordings of works for piano for the left hand. This repertoire is commonly underestimated. One is familiar with Ravel's Concerto, which the latter wrote for the pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who had lost his right arm in World War I. The concerto was written for the pianist. Wittgenstein commissioned other works, but a total of more than 600 compositions for the left hand exist. Zecchini has recorded 78 of them: Solo chamber music and concerto repertoire by 48 composers. They now appear on 10 CDs with a bonus DVD as a box set at an attractive price.

"The undisputed highlight of the recording (Vol. 4 of the series) for me, however, is Britten's Diversions. It is a mystery to me why such a piece still leads a shadowy existence in concert life and tends to be perceived as marginal within Britten's oeuvre. Congenially, Zecchini/Onken present the Diversions simply for what they are: an ingenious masterpiece of original invention, brilliant orchestration and clarity of form.the composer, then only twenty-seven years old, wrote the work in the summer of 1940 while in America (as a convinced pacifist, Britten had left England in 1939, only to return to his homeland in 1942). Possibly the noble British understatement of the title Diversions contributed to this.britten deliberately chose not to use the traditional, heavyweight concertante form, but instead arranged the piece as a series of eleven variations, giving the movements characterizing headings such as Recitative, Romance, March, Nocturne, Badinerie, etc. The music thus always remains manageable, comprehensible and varied for the listener.it is not surprising that Britten succeeded in writing for the "left-handed piano" in a completely new and independent way, since he himself was one of the finest pianists of the 20th century (less as a virtuoso than as an accompanist who was able to elicit color nuances and lines from the instrument that had never been heard before) Maxime Zecchini has achieved a great success with his anthology, and with Jan Moritz Onken he has one of the undoubtedly most serious and charismatic conductors of the younger generation at his side.
