The works recorded here are by Maximilian Steinberg and Dmitri Shostakovich, the former being the teacher of the latter, and both are representatives of different generations of 20th century Russian music. Composed almost simultaneously, their works differ greatly in their genres, their way of thinking and their visual language. Steinberg's symphony, a fully mature work, remains true to the traditions of Russian and European culture and stands out through its conception of the theme of "personality and world". It was first performed in Russia and abroad in the 1930s and is recorded here for the first time; a new discovery for lovers of symphonic music is undoubtedly to be expected. In contrast to his mentor, the young Shostakovich grew up in an atmosphere of the avant-garde and the abandonment of tradition. In his early ballet The Bolt, he paid tribute to the era of socialist industrialization and created a cheerful, divertimento-like work which, however, is not lacking in daring. Its theatricality and satirical character are perfectly suited to the Ural Youth Symphony Orchestra, whose musicians were around the same age as Shostakovich when he composed the ballet.
