This special box set contains the completesymphonies and tone poems of JeanSibelius, a composer whose works embodiedthe musical language of his native country.Such was his popularity in his native Finlandthat from 1897 onwards he was given ayearly state grant, permitting him to focussolely on his creative endeavours. Sibeliuswas heavily influenced by the Kalevala – thefirst real example of a Finnish nationalliterature – and his music is praised fordepicting the rugged form of the Finnishlandscape. Among the works in thiscollection are the Lemminka¨nen Suite, inwhich we find the Swan of Tuonela, theSecond Symphony and Finlandia, the tale ofthe struggle and subsequent victory of theFinnish people.The recordings by the Berliner Sinfonie?Orchester, directed by Kurt Sanderling, aredescribed by Gramophone’s AndrewAchenbach as full of ‘strength, integrity andfierce intelligence’, and are combined withperformances by the Moscow PhilharmonicOrchestra, conducted by Vassily Sinaisky.
