"Simply phenomenal" (Fanfare) - British-American clarinettist Jean Johnson makes her debut at Linn together with her husband, pianist Steven Osborne. An avid chamber musician who has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, Jean has put together a program of beautiful Romantic works. Although Brahms is not represented in this recital, he links all four works together. Gustav Jenner was his only long-term pupil; the stylistic influence of his teacher can be felt in Jenner's Clarinet Sonata, an ambitious work that brings out the natural melodiousness of the instrument. Robert and Clara Schumann were friends and mentors of Brahms, and Jean recorded arrangements of their Romances. Weber brings the program to a fitting close - Brahms postponed his retirement from musical life after hearing his Clarinet Concerto - with the Grand Duo Concertant.
