The Italian ensemble Il Pomo d'Oro has established itself in the field of historical performance practice and recently expanded: it now includes a choir, and this is its first solo recording.

Conducted by Giuseppe Maletto, the ensemble presents Gesualdo's fascinating first book of Sacræ Cantiones. Less well known than his madrigals, the 19 five-part motets explore the theme of repentance through the penitential liturgy and the figure of the Virgin Mary. The painful voluptuousness of the chromaticism, the intensity of expression unusual for the genre, and the sophisticated lines make this collection unique in its time.
